The Storm Over Cyprus’ Selection
The announcement of Antigoni comes amid controversy after recent reports indicated two finalists were selected to represent the country. The names that surfaced were Josephine and Giorgos Perris, while Antigoni was only mentioned as one of the eight national finalists.
Another rumor causing uproar suggested that the Cypriot choice was already made, and that Josephine was selected to represent Cyprus at Eurovision 2026. This rumor spread following a statement by Greek TV host Giorgos Liagas, who claimed on his show that there was “a 99% chance” the selection of Josephine was final. However, the Cypriot national broadcaster CyBC rapidly refuted these claims. In an official statement, CyBC clarified that the selection process was still ongoing, the responsible committee had not reached a decision, and urged fans to be patient until an official announcement is made.
Antigoni – Who Are You?
Antigoni, born in Cyprus, recently joined the international tour of Marina Satti, Greece’s representative in Eurovision 2024. In interviews and on social media, she has repeatedly expressed her desire to represent her homeland at Eurovision.
Antigoni began writing songs as a teenager and studied at the BRIT School in London, known for producing artists such as Adele and Amy Winehouse. In her early twenties, she signed a contract with Island Records and began developing her own sound – a mix of pop and R&B with Mediterranean influences and Greek instruments. Her music frequently features bilingual lyrics; she sings in both Greek and English, reflecting her identity as both British and Cypriot.
She is best known from the British reality show Love Island, in which she participated in the eighth season in 2022, which increased her visibility in the United Kingdom and Cyprus. Alongside her television exposure, she continues to focus on her musical career.
