San Marino at Eurovision 2026: after controversy over Boy George’s participation, the British singer refuses to stay silent and responds to fans in a highly contentious move. All the details and reactions.

An additional development has unfolded in the last 24 hours around the ongoing debate over who will represent San Marino at Eurovision  2026. Following his absence from the stage of the San Marino national selection and from the official Eurovision artist list, San Marino’s representative, Senhit, has put an end to the rumors and confirmed the participation of Boy GeorgeBoy George will join her on the stage in Vienna with the song “Superstar”. However, as soon as the news was published, fan reactions followed swiftly, with many mocking the participation of the British singer, who was not prepared to remain silent.

Will Boy George appear on the Eurovision stage?

Turbulent days have been unfolding for those chosen to represent San Marino at Eurovision 2026. Since the end of the San Marino national final, one question has dominated fan discussions: will Boy George actually take part in the song he co‑wrote and appear on the big stage in Vienna, Austria?

The persistent speculation and the fact that the British singer was missing both from the national final stage and from the official Eurovision artist roster prompted an official response from Senhit, who finally put the rumors to rest. In an interview published over the weekend, Senhit confirmed that, even if the team did not necessarily plan for the song to win, the British star clearly took that possibility into account and even declared, “I will definitely be involved, and I will be on stage with you”.

Fans push back: “We don’t need you”

As soon as the news appeared on various international news sites, an especially notable post also surfaced on X. The post drew a flood of comments from fans insisting there is no real need for Boy George to perform San Marino’s entry and questioning why Senhit wants him at all after achieving such an impressive result on her own in the national final. Boy George, for his part, chose not to ignore the criticism and replied to fans one by one, with highly contentious and heavily sarcastic remarks.

Among the comments were fans wondering whether there is any point in his participation if he is expected to appear on stage for only three seconds. The singer responded that there absolutely is a point – he has a new hat. Many reactions focused on the idea that Senhit is strong enough on her own and does not need him beside her on stage: “Senhit is the queen, we only want her,” “She (Senhit) doesn’t need him.” Here too, the singer did not stay indifferent and replied: “She wants me,” and also: “We both don’t need you!”

The criticism from fans did not begin with the latest online exchanges. It started already with the performance in the final of San Marino’s national selection, where Boy George’s contribution was limited to a few seconds of his voice over an animation of his face on the screen behind Senhit. One of the standout reactions to the official performance, uploaded to the Eurovision YouTube channel, read: “Senhit and a WhatsApp voice note from Boy George”.

Waiting for rehearsals to reveal the full picture

Despite the wide range of reactions on social media and despite Senhit’s confirmation that Boy George will indeed appear alongside her at Eurovision with “Superstar”, fans across Europe will likely only gain a clear picture of the nature and extent of his involvement once rehearsals for Eurovision 2026 begin. Nevertheless, it is worth noting that the British singer currently sounds fired up, excited and deeply engaged – at least emotionally – in San Marino’s Eurovision participation.

Senhit Zadik Zadik is a 46-year-old Italian singer born in Bologna to Eritrean parents.

At the beginning of her career, she performed in numerous musicals such as “Fame”, “The Lion King”, and “Hair” in Switzerland and Germany. In 2002, she returned to Italy, seeking recognition in the Italian music industry. She released her debut album in 2006, followed by another in 2007. In 2009, she released her third album in English.

Senhit was chosen to represent San Marino, a small enclave within Italy, at Eurovision 2011 with the song “Stand By“, which placed 16th in the semi-final. Following Eurovision, she released several English-language singles and became a regular guest on an Italian television show.

In 2014, she changed the spelling of her stage name from Senit to Senhit to mark a fresh new chapter in her life. In 2020, she was selected once again to represent San Marino with the song “Freaky!“, but her participation was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A year later, in 2021, she returned to the Eurovision stage alongside American rapper Flo Rida, finishing 22nd in the final with 50 points.

San Marino at Eurovision 2026

“Superstar” is the title of the song that will be performed by Senhit, who will represent San Marino at Eurovision 2026 and will compete in the 2nd half of the first semi-final on May 12th in Vienna, Austria.  This marks the third time Senhit will compete in Eurovision, following her previous representations for San Marino in 2011 and 2021. In 2020, she was also selected to perform for San Marino, but her participation was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The song was written and composed by Senhit and Boy George, whose participation alongside Senhit in the contest is still surrounded by some uncertainty, together with several songwriters who have previously written Eurovision hits: Anderz Wrethov, Thomas Stengaard, Kill J, John Emil Johansson, and Jonathan Bellini. The song is performed entirely in English.

The song “Superstar” is a pop-dance track with a message of empowerment and self-confidence. It centers on self-acceptance and the courage to express one’s true identity without fear or apology. With its vibrant rhythm reminiscent of club music, the song encourages listeners to embrace their strengths and uniqueness, celebrating the “superstar” within each person. The collaboration with Boy George, known throughout his career as an artist advocating for freedom of expression and personal identity, reinforces the song’s message of authenticity and self-pride.

Currently, San Marino is ranked 27th in the betting tables ahead of Eurovision 2026.

Eurovision 2026: This will be San Marino’s 16th participation in the Eurovision Song Contest. San Marino joined the competition in 2008 and achieved its best result in Eurovision 2019 when the singer Serhat finished in 19th place with the song “Say Na Na Na”.
