TRM confirms Moldova will participate in Eurovision 2027 following EBU Deadline Extension
The Moldovan national broadcaster TRM has confirmed that Moldova will participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2027, which will be held in Burgas, Bulgaria. Croatia becomes the 33th country to officially confirm its participation in the highly anticipated competition, among the countries that have already confirmed their participation are Israel, Denmark, Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Canada – which will make its Eurovision debut – and host country Bulgaria.
Moldova at Eurovision: A Distinctive Musical Identity
Moldova has participated in Eurovision 20 times but has never won. In 2020, Natalia Gordienko was due to compete with “Prison”, but her participation was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Moldova returned the following year.
Moldova was absent from Eurovision for the first time in its history in 2025, but has achieved several impressive results over the years. For its debut in 2005, the country sent Zdob și Zdub with “Boonika bate doba” (in English: “Grandma Beats the Drum”), finishing sixth. Moldova has since experienced ups and downs, with its best result coming in 2017, when Sunstroke Project finished third with “Hey Mamma”.
Moldova is known for its distinctive musical identity and its incorporation of folk music and local traditions into its entries. This was particularly evident in 2005, 2009, 2012, 2018, 2022-2023 and 2026, when the country qualified for the Grand Final. Over the years, ethnic sounds and energetic stage performances have become defining features of Moldova’s entries.
Alongside its successes, Moldova has also experienced difficult moments. The country has reached both ends of the scoreboard, from third place to last place in 2014. Between 2014 and 2016, it failed to qualify for the Grand Final for three consecutive years. In contrast, Moldova finished on the left-hand side of the Grand Final scoreboard in 2005, 2007, 2011-2013, 2017-2018 and 2021-2022, demonstrating its ability to recover from less successful periods.
After its absence in 2025, Moldova returned to Eurovision in 2026 and continued to prove its ability to stand out on the European stage. Satoshi finished eighth in the Grand Final with “Viva, Moldova”, continuing the country’s tradition of Top 10 finishes. This result added to previous successes, including Sunstroke Project’s third-place finish in 2017, seventh place in 2022, and sixth- and tenth-place finishes in 2005, 2007 and 2018, respectively.
Moldova is still waiting for its first Eurovision victory, but has established itself as a country with a distinctive musical style and the ability to achieve strong results. With its eighth-place finish in 2026, Moldova added another achievement to its record, proving that even after a year away, it can return to the competition and finish among the leading entries.
