Israel first participated in the Eurovision contest in 1973 and has since participated 46 times (39 of which were in the final). Israel has won the competition four times to date. Its first victory occurred in 1978 when Izhar Cohen and the Alphabeta performed the song “A-Ba-Ni-Bi” on the ground of Paris. In 2018, Israel won for the last time with the song “Toy” performed by Netta Barzilai.
The number of victories for Israel in the contest is an impressive achievement. Only six countries have won more times than Israel: the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France, and Luxembourg—each with five wins, Sweden and Ireland with seven wins. Additionally, Israel is one of the few countries in the contest, along with Switzerland, Spain, Luxembourg, and Ireland, that has won a contest held on its own territory.
