Eden Golan, Israel’s representative at Eurovision 2024, is set to perform at the UN headquarters during a memorial ceremony for the events of October 7th. She will sing “October Rain,” which was disqualified by the EBU from Eurovision.

What wasn’t suitable for Eurovision may find a fitting place at the United Nations. Eden Golan, Israel’s representative at Eurovision 2024, is set to participate in a memorial ceremony marking one year since the October 7 massacre at the UN headquarters in New York City. Golan is expected to perform the song that stirred controversy in Europe and even jeopardized Israel’s participation in the Eurovision contest, “October Rain”.

The Journey from Disqualification to International Stage

For those who may not remember, “October Rain,” written by Keren Peles and Avi Ohayon, along with producer Stav Beger (co-writer and producer of “Toy,” the Eurovision 2018 winner), reached the final selection stage for Eurovision 2024. Although the song was chosen by the committee to represent Israel, it was disqualified by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) due to claims of containing political messages.

From “Hurricane” to “October Rain”: A Full Circle Moment

Ultimately, the outcome was quite different. The song “Hurricane” was written at the last minute, approved by the EBU, and selected as Israel’s entry for the competition. Eden brought pride to the nation when she performed on stage, facing loud boos, and achieved a commendable fifth place in the grand final with 375 points after winning the second semi-final.

A Significant Performance at the UN

Now, in a full-circle moment, Eden will perform her original song at the UN headquarters. Reports indicate that the memorial ceremony will be attended by ambassadors from various countries, representatives of families with hostages still held in Gaza, and prominent figures from the Jewish community. The Israeli delegation will be led by Foreign Minister Israel Katz.

Israel in Eurovision 2024

“Hurricane” is the name of the song performed by singer Eden Golan, who was chosen to represent Israel after winning the tenth season of “HaKochav Haba”. Israel advanced to the final after winning the second semi-final with 194 points, and in the grand final reached fifth place with 375 points. In the public vote, Israel came in second place, just 14 points behind the first place.

This is the second consecutive time that Israel has reached the top five, an achievement it had not attained since its streak of successes in 1998-1999.

Eurovision 2024: This was Israel’s 46th participation in Eurovision. Israel joined the competition in 1973 and has won it four times over the years. Israel’s last victory was at Eurovision 2018 with the song “Toy” performed by singer Netta Barzilai.
