Germany’s Eurovision 2026 representative, Sarah Engels, faces media backlash after posting a video from South Africa in which she sings with local schoolchildren, prompting accusations of exploitation and cultural insensitivity.

Preparations for Eurovision 2026 are gaining momentum, but Germany’s road to the competition appears filled with image-related obstacles. Sarah Engels, Germany’s representative for Eurovision 2026, who will perform in the grand final in Vienna, Austria, recently shared a controversial video from her vacation in South Africa. The clip shows Engels surrounded by dozens of local schoolchildren, singing together her song “Fire”, the song she will perform on the big European stage. While the singer described the moment as “a unique musical connection that transcends language”, many German netizens and cultural critics condemned it, calling it a cynical use of children for personal career promotion.

“White Savior Complex”

The video that sparked the uproar showed Engels acting as a “music teacher for a day” at a South African school. In her original post, the singer wrote:

“Music doesn’t need language — it connects us”.

Adding that seeing “the sparkling eyes and pure joy” of the children would stay with her forever. However, it quickly became clear that Sarah Engels was indeed “playing with fire” (just like the title of her Eurovision entry). Germany’s national broadcaster and entertainment columns were soon flooded with angry reactions accusing her of embracing a “white savior complex” — a term describing when a Western individual uses disadvantaged groups to enhance their public image.

A key criticism against Engels revolves around apparent hypocrisy regarding privacy. In Germany, commentators noted that the singer is extremely cautious about not exposing her own children’s faces online to protect their privacy, yet in this controversial clip, the African children’s faces appeared unblurred.

“Interesting how your principles change when it’s not your own kids”.

Music Still Bridges Cultures

It seems the strong criticism got through, as Engels has since removed the video from her Instagram account. Nevertheless, she chose to leave up other photos and clips from the trip, some still showing the schoolchildren. On the other hand, some voices have defended the singer. Many fans and individuals identifying with the African community argued that the accusations were exaggerated, saying the children’s joy in the video was completely genuine. According to them, music truly connects cultures, and there is nothing wrong in sharing moments of mutual happiness.
