Austria’s Cosmo unveils the official “Tanzschein” video for Eurovision 2026 in Vienna, blending club visuals, masks and a playful social message.

The official music video for Austria’s Eurovision entry, Tanzschein” (in English: “Dance Licence”), performed by Cosmo, has been released. The singer will represent host country Austria in the Grand Final of Eurovision 2026 on home soil in Vienna on 16 May. The song was written by Cosmo together with Elias Stejskal and Ella Stern. Unmasking the night: when the lyrics come to life

The new video closely mirrors Cosmo’s performance in the national final and, more importantly, turns the German‑language lyrics into a clever visual narrative. The song describes a nightclub that, behind its neon lights, is actually a “Tier‑Oase” – an “oasis of animals.” At the start of the video, we see Cosmo entering the club wearing a black tank top with shiny black armour, an orange faux‑fur jacket and, of course, his signature blue star painted on his face.

As he walks through the corridors, he notices club‑goers wearing various animal masks, but the mood between them is tense and off. In one scene, a lion character – dressed identically to Cosmo and clearly hinting at the singer’s masked alter ego – aggressively tries to hit on a partygoer wearing a gazelle mask, only for her to reject him immediately. This moment illustrates, almost word for word, the lines from the song: “Und der Löwe / Versuchts bei einer Gazelle… Ist bekanntlich nicht romantisch” (“And the lion / tries his luck with a gazelle… as we know, it’s not romantic”).

The turning point comes when the real Cosmo, appearing completely without a mask and radiating authenticity, enters the room. He begins to dance and approaches the woman in the gazelle mask. Because he comes to her as his true self, she removes her mask and listens to him. Gradually, his influence spreads to everyone else in the club: the people around them take off their animal masks and join in the unique “Tanzschein” choreography that Cosmo has created. This act of unmasking ties directly into the song’s closing lines: “Doch ohne Tanzschein / Werden sie Tiere bleiben” (“But without a dance licence / they will remain animals”). In other words, only when they drop the ego and embrace the freedom to dance do they become truly human again.

Disco ball energy: Cosmo’s road to Vienna

As a reminder, Cosmo earned the right to represent Austria after defeating 11 competitors in the national selection “Vienna Calling – Wer singt für Österreich?” produced by the Austrian national broadcaster (ORF).

In his memorable national‑final performance, Cosmo took to the stage with his blue star, wearing a sparkling shirt reminiscent of a disco ball. He was joined by three animal characters who rotated on stage, with extensive use of LED screens and strong visual inspiration from the German techno scene. By the end of the song, the stage was filled with pink smoke and the screens displayed a jungle‑like atmosphere, rounding off a bouncy, high‑energy performance with a distinctly club‑oriented vibe.

What lies behind the “dance licence”?

The meaning of “Tanzschein” does not rest on a heavy emotional storyline but on a light‑hearted, fun and highly relevant social message. The song – and its video – offers a subtle critique of modern club culture, where people sometimes arrive at parties wearing metaphorical “masks,” chasing status instead of genuinely dancing and letting go.

Through the humorous concept of a “dance licence” – where only those who truly come to dance as themselves are allowed in – the track becomes a metaphor for wanting to see people open, joyful and full of life. Cosmo urges listeners to live in the moment, to feel human connection through music and dance, and to bring back a sense of freedom and fun to the dance floor.

Cosmo – Who Are You?

Cosmo is a 19‑year‑old singer from Vienna who was chosen to represent Austria at Eurovision 2026 with “Tanzschein” via the national selection “Vienna Calling – Wer singt für Österreich?” This is his first commercially released single. Before Eurovision, Cosmo gained experience in regional amateur competitions in Austria and wrote songs both for others and “for the drawer.” His Eurovision entry is a pioneering, innovative track unlike anything previously seen at the contest – yet it strongly reflects the musical style currently popular in the host country.

Lyrics – “Tanzschein”

Steh vor dem Club
Bin schon gespannt
Sag hast du Lust
Auf einen Tanz?

Wir treten ein
Auf der Suche nach Ekstase
Doch hinterm Neonlichterschein

Ey ey
Das kann doch gar nicht wahr sein
Die machen sich zum Affen
Und Tänzer seh ich gar kein

Ey ey
Ich hätt eine Idee
Ein Konzept
Ja das wär einfach perfekt

Sie brauchen einen Tanzschein
Da muss ich streng sein
Weil ohne Tanzschein
Lass ich Sie nicht rein

Haben Sie einen Tanzschein?
Das soll kein Witz sein
Weil ohne Tanzschein
Da kommen Sie nicht rein

Ich schließ die Augen
Dann bin ich Clubbesitzer
Und auf der schwarzen Liste
Stehen die Steroidenspritzer

Und auch wenn sie nur bellen
Und eigentlich gar nicht beißen
Das ist hier die Regel
Hunde müssen draußen bleiben

Ey ey
So kann es jeden Tag sein
Wir tanzen durch die Nacht
Und Löwen seh ich gar kein

Ey ey
Draußen macht sich wer zum Affen
Doch der Türsteher sagt mit einem Lachen

Sie brauchen einen Tanzschein
Da muss ich streng sein
Weil ohne Tanzschein
Lass ich Sie nicht rein

Haben Sie einen Tanzschein?
Das soll kein Witz sein
Weil ohne Tanzschein
Da kommen Sie nicht rein

Der Gorilla in der Ecke
Träumt von seiner Pirouette
Er scheut sich vor den Blicken
Die die Artgenossen schicken

Ich nehm ihn an der Hand, ja
Bildet einen Gang
Wir schauen uns in die Augen
Und jetzt fangen wir an

Ey ey ey ey
Du kannst mir vertrauen
Ey ey ey ey
Hier ist alles erlaubt
Ooh…
Wir haben uns doch lang genug versteckt

Und alle wollen einen Tanzschein
Sie wollen wie wir sein
Doch ohne Tanzschein
Werden sie Tiere bleiben

Haben Sie einen Tanzschein?
Das soll kein Witz sein
Weil ohne Tanzѕchein
Dа kommen Sie nicht rein

Austria at Eurovision 2026

Tanzschein” (in English: “Dance Licence”) is the song that will be performed by singer Cosmo, who will represent host country Austria at Eurovision 2026 in Vienna. Thanks to Austria’s victory last year, Cosmo is automatically qualified for the Grand Final on 16 May. The song was written and composed by Cosmo himself together with Elias Stejskal and Ella Stern.

“Tanzschein” is an up‑tempo dance and house track that blends humour, social commentary and a strong club atmosphere, heavily inspired by the German techno scene. Through the metaphor of a nightclub where partygoers behave like “animals,” focused on ego and posing instead of dancing, Cosmo introduces the concept of a “dance licence” – only those who truly want to let go and dance can enter. The song is a fun, energetic call to drop social masks, shake off judgment and find authentic human connection through music on the dancefloor.

Austria is currently ranked 32nd in the betting odds.

Eurovision 2026: This will be Austria’s 58th participation in Eurovision. Austria joined the competition in 1957 and has won three times over the years. Austria’s last victory was in Eurovision 2025 with the song “Wasted Love” performed by singer JJ.
